NEW SCHOOL
So, I’m studying in MIHCA now. I like that name better, it sounds fugly to say Magsaysay Institute of Culinary and Hospitality. I mean come on, you’d think about engines, masts, cargo, and OFW with those tags. Not that these words are demeaning, beneath me or negative in their substance. Its just that my industry is about food so my school, being equated with metal, rust or, worse, the parched Arabian desert seemed weird and unattractive. I think perception is very important here, so..
Anyway, we are somehow connected to the renowned Johnson and Wales University, although I am kinda lost in regard to the degree – somewhat connected, very connected, a bit connected – no idea still. Bottomline is the school has no problem (so far). Facilities are the best I think in the whole of P.I. Dunno about Enderun, though.
So what’s happening now? We’re almost done with the foundation week. The crowd’s – my mates – good (although, we were sent to the new facility in Makati – meaning, there’re fewer people still and henceforth, a shortage of good-looking peeps). Then, the uniform is kinda crappy. In addition, I have to crop my hair, contend with either boring or egotistical instructors. And so, see, things are normal.
I am supposed to say something about the characters in this whole caper but there’s an exam coming this afternoon, so the dude needs to review.

TALKING POINTS
AR: So the key questions that you should address in the article are:
blah blah blah
Dude: Seems fine to me.
AR: Am not done, yet.
Dude: Oh, yeah? Did I say so? People are so uptight these days.
AR: Anyway, you should look at books, films, you know I need a good long set of references for this. See the West Wing, The Great Mcginty, read Timothy Corrigan -
Dude: Like I don’t know better. Are you gonna reimburse the expenses?
AR: Well, no. But as you see the project price is astronomical as it is.
Dude: Er. was just asking. ![]()
AR: You gotta produce about 8 pages. Thats about 2500 words.
Dude: Sure.
AR: Ok, good. You got 7 hours.
Dude: Eh? what do you take me for? All those film watching and McGinty reading; eight pages and all and you’re giving me just a 7 hour turnaround time? For god’s sake, that’s a frigging treatise already.
AR: Can’t do anything about it. Am just giving you the heads up Chris. There’s a queue out there.
Dude: Wah! %@*#!!!!!

BLOG
Siyempre, with all the stuffs going on, mapapatigil ka di ba: Syet, what’s happening with the world? Me domino effect na yung Wallstreet fiasco at malamang dahil nga sa interconnected na tayo dahil sa global village phenomenon, di ako magtataka na yung damage nakarating bigla sa aking doorstep mismo. Waah. Wag naman sana. Di ba nga me nabasa ako na baka etong mga call centers dito sa P.I. e maging casualties bigla. Sabagay, yung HSBC is eliminating na more than 1000 offices and works (mostly front ends daw >> di ba kasama dun customer support?)

WHAT’S COOKING?
It’s about 80% official. I am going to do Culinary Arts come November. Ye! The bit of uncertainty there rests on these facts: 1) I might get to the enrolment too late because frankly the allotment for the whole endeavor would be completed by mid-October and there’s just a lot of peeps angling to do CA as well (heard from a friend that as early as June there are waitlisted students already for the November term in Global Academy); and, 2) My bank would suddenly go bankrupt with all the Wallstreet turmoil happening and all .
One of the interesting things about this whole stuff goin on is finding the right school. Things like the ff are big factors in the choice: Is the school uniform crappy and would it suit me? >>> Chris in a toque? gah. Gorgeous people? Lol. School reputation. And, of course, the ROI, practicality – whatever you may call it. I am always after the other end of the bargain.
ROI…
For example, there’s this CCA who wants (I heard) more than half a mil for a two-year course. Ridiculous, eh? not exclusively because it is so expensive (all CA schools are expensive, though there are those who want less) but also because of the time. I mean fvck, I’d be 29 when I would look for my “first job.” And how much do they pay “cooks” these days?
But CCA is a good school and so is ISCAHM I heard. But now, for me, things boiled down to two: Global and MIHCA.

PAYPAL BANKING
For all those who have Paypal accounts, you can now withdraw money to your bank accounts as of this writing. You might have noticed the rectangular “withdraw-money-to-your-Philippine-bank” ad when you login to your account plus the fact that emails were also sent, so no use for me harping about it as a news, I guess.
Anyway, it’s easy to register a Philippine bank account (I have registered my Union Bank’s). Just be sure to get the correct bank code. Apparently, there is a difference between a bank swift code and bank code. I think the latter is just part of Paypal’s idea of imposing its own world order because it is not some part of international banking standard. There is an official list (Paypal’s) of the bank codes and you will find it below.
I figured this out because, while registering my bank, Paypal is asking for a 9-digit bank code. See, Unionbank’s bank swift code is UBPHPHMM. That is one digit short. Fortunately I cannot argue with a computer because I would if I could. “But there’s only EIGHT!” (that sort of thing) So I googled the information that would prove Paypal wrong. Well, it turned out, there is a separate list, indeed. Woot. A number of techies blog the list. They corroborate each other so I take it as the real deal. lol. Seriously, Ebay has it.
Official Paypal Bank Code List
So:I would be trying this new alternative because withdrawing Paypal fund to my Eon eats up a lot of time. It distresses me a lot when it lets you wait several days more than the promised 7 business days transfer.

MY FINANCIAL IQ
I started the New Year by depleting my bank account. As of the moment, the balance is zero. And I am happy.
Er… what did I do with the money? Well, the purchase is still in the process and I am quivering with excitement (I am exaggerating, of course). Anyway, about this time, a piece of news came out about the “financial IQ” of the average Filipino dropping to a staggering 48. Perhaps mine is way below that, but what the heck. Heath Ledger died at 28. Y’all dig my drift?
Besides, the American bank, who set store on high savings as benchmark for the supposedly sound financial intelligence of us mortals, of course, wanted to keep our moonies within their vault as much as possible (to the extent of branding us financially stupid)…
So…
Still…
I feel guilty. T.T
But what can I do?
Bwahaha.

A NEW HOME
I am definitely going to get a new website. Leeching from WordPress is never gonna be enough. I realized that I will not be able to milk this blog like really milk it lol if I don’t have my own space. It’s not that suddenly I am having this grandiose vision of taking over the web or that I have this moment when the airconditioner suddenly blasted the coldest draft and there’s this bright light commanding me to er, buy a web domain. *wink
See, there are tons of web outfits out there who will pay when you let them piggyback on your “web presence” (diumano) so I’m finally gonna do it. I have been postponing this thing for like ages already but yesterday a friend told me he got richer by 500 dollars because of CPMs and all that sort. Sonofagun.
The way things are, I couldn’t for the life of me set up Google Adsense here in the gratis version of WordPress. If I have the whole package in my own server, then I could finally control the WordPress module and ram adsense down its bellies so to speak. So there.
And then, I need a new camera. Wtf >> Talking about the pains of investing.

FINALLY…
The Pinoy blogosphere is abuzz these days because finally, Paypal allowed the Receive money feature to its Filipino account holders. For those not in the loop, Paypal is a cheap no-fuss, and almost universal way to send-receive money online. Previously, Paypal Philippines was limited to Sending money only. Now, we have both worlds.
So if you are a freelancer or your work is connected with BPO, you’ll do away with the seemingly bureaucratic red tape of bank remittances and their ridiculously expensive charges and low conversion rates. See, some clients are even turned off when you start raving about bank details, swift codes, addresses and all those whatnots of the stone age methodologies of remittance services. I think the offshot of this is a more lively e-commerce in the PI. The SMEs will be happy. And, of course, I, too. It’s uber nice. Anyway, I’ll still have to get acquainted with it. Aack, I need a credit card!!

OT: I am still grumbling about my gym session today. I was handed a new program and I had this suspicon that the gym instructor wants to kill me. I used to do 8-10 routines but now, I got 15! Futek, I could barely raise my fingers because I feel like I have walked and crawled from here to the moon and back.

OT v. 2.0: I have a plan. So, let’s see by the weekend. *evil laugh.
