The Lenovo Pocket Yoga – a netbook that was apparently being developed by Lenovo’s Beijing office for two years already. This pix, among others were leaked after  Sony decided to enter the UMPC fray with the launch of their Sony VAIO P.

APPLE TALK

Posted in tech at 7:29 pm by chris

I have expressed reservations about getting another Apple computer given a choice between it and a PC. Yesterday, I have tried the Macbook in Powermac Center and I feel in love with the black one again because it reminded me of the beauty behind the fine ergonomics of the Mac keyboard. In my line of work, how the keys responds to the touch is critical in the motivation side and sometimes even in getting inspiration. It allows your thoughts and your mind to seamlessly work together for an interrupted flow of ideas.

Naks. See what a mac can do? Fvck. Another one’s gonna cost me an arm and all my limbs. T.T

TOYZ ET AL.

Posted in I recommend, tech at 12:39 pm by chris

This January I’d be finding a new crib. That’s why I need more money – for it and for the tools that must come with the whole circumstance. lol. I figured, I won’t have any problems with the net connection (which is very important) because I saw places that offer connectivity in their amenities. And so, what I need is another laptop now that my Ibook is still being fixed. Now, here are my requirements:

It should be a Windows-run PC, tsk! Not that I’m trading mac for this monstrosity but right now I am really finding it hard to have my Ibook fixed because of the support shortage. Hence, the current preference.

Then, it should be small nuff that I could bring it anywhere, conspicuously.

Secondly, it should be as sleek as the mac, or at least some evidences are present to make it appear that efforts were made in this department. lol. (for example, I kinda liked the Dell Vostro but the round fugliness of the dell logo turns me off)

Third, it should be so sturdy because I am a dude after all. (Reminds of how hassle it is, wiping my hands constantly lest I smudge the Ibook)

Finally, it should not hurt my wallet so bad. I am cost-cutting so to speak. I have bills to pay.

So, I figured I’d need a Lenovo, or a Toshiba or a nicer looking Dell or – an alternative – a netbook.

Now, these netbooks or UMPCs are getting more than enough of my attention already: I am looking at the Asus EEPC and the Aspire One. They are so fucking small, plus the AAO is stylish, plus these toys are phenomenally cheap.

The fancy EEPC.

The fancy EEPC.

What’s the difference, anyway? Well, apparently a netbook is technically not a laptop. Instead one could consider it the toy wedged between a smartphone and a laptop. It’s primarily for net browsing and light mobile computing. Thus, the name. See, it has its own mobile processor although it can run XP (although slower) it doesn’t have elements found in the regular notebook such as disk drives, big HDD and yes, the powerful core2duo and so forth.

So what’s the big deal for me? Hmmm… I would use the gadget mainly for writing and communicating. I don’t do much gaming and graphic and web designing these days. Laptops have veeeery short shelf life these days… So.

I may be toting around an AAO one of these days. Am excited.

TALKING TO THE FUTURE

Posted in tech at 3:56 pm by chris

The US 2008 elections shattered some traditions not just by electing Obama as the new potus. CNN premiered the first ever reporting where a person was beamed from Chicago to the CNN headquarters in New York as a hologram! It’s super cool reminiscent of the Star Wars version of a phone call.

Watch:

Wow!

ODDS AND ENDS

Posted in lifestyle, tech at 7:39 pm by chris

1. I was browsing the web today and found a piece that talks about a study (a real one) that says leaders would usually come from the ranks of narcissistic people. Makes sense?

2. I am so into a simple browser game these days called Ikariam (see the pix). It’s a Civilization-like online game that you can play using your browser. It’s so simple and pretty: no installation required. I get a kick building cities, building armies and stealing goods from other cities. Maybe I’ll blog about this sometime. I am on the Theta server, so y’all gimme a holler if you’re playing as well.

3. Finally, I am torn between GA or MIHCA. Dammit. I’ve been to both schools the other day and they both have their own pros and cons. MIHCA has uber nice facilities! I also discovered that they don’t require people paying everything outright, so I get the chance to splurge the money I’ve been saving.

What else?

A DEAD TIGER

Posted in tech at 7:47 pm by chris

Last night my Ibook decided to turn itself off. I thought it was some stupid mac glitch, which rarely happens. But unfortunately the fainting spell was more than what it seemed and threatened to be a major headache by simply dropping dead. When I turn the baby on, it would work for a while and freeze and shut itself off. It’s a bit annoying but, hey, it’s my ibook. It’s not like I could shake it or kick it like my pc box to make it work. I dug some stuffs from google and it appears I have installed some software or updates that “perhaps(?)” ticked the machine off. I figured I needed to reinstall the OSX Tiger or upgrade to Leopard.

Such a pity that Mac support is so scarce here, no techies no software vendors. I need a friggin laptop!!!! I am strapped to my desk without it. So, in the meantime, I don’t have a life.

PAYPAL BANKING

Posted in money, tech tagged , , , at 10:16 am by chris

For all those who have Paypal accounts, you can now withdraw money to your bank accounts as of this writing. You might have noticed the rectangular “withdraw-money-to-your-Philippine-bank” ad when you login to your account plus the fact that emails were also sent, so no use for me harping about it as a news, I guess.

Anyway, it’s easy to register a Philippine bank account (I have registered my Union Bank’s). Just be sure to get the correct bank code. Apparently, there is a difference between a bank swift code and bank code. I think the latter is just part of Paypal’s idea of imposing its own world order because it is not some part of international banking standard. There is an official list (Paypal’s) of the bank codes and you will find it below.

I figured this out because, while registering my bank, Paypal is asking for a 9-digit bank code. See, Unionbank’s bank swift code is UBPHPHMM. That is one digit short. Fortunately I cannot argue with a computer because I would if I could. “But there’s only EIGHT!” (that sort of thing) So I googled the information that would prove Paypal wrong. Well, it turned out, there is a separate list, indeed. Woot. A number of techies blog the list. They corroborate each other so I take it as the real deal. lol. Seriously, Ebay has it.

Official Paypal Bank Code List

So:I would be trying this new alternative because withdrawing Paypal fund to my Eon eats up a lot of time. It distresses me a lot when it lets you wait several days more than the promised 7 business days transfer.

NEW ADDIE

Posted in tech at 12:00 pm by chris

Finally, I got my new site up and running although there are still minor details to be sorted. I am getting impatient with it as new issues come up, such as:

1. I realized that I didn’t like the domain name after all;
2. The Coppermine (for my photography gallery) has very lousy themes;
3. and so on and so forth.
new blog screenshot
Anyway, here’s the screenshot as I am currently trying to make up my mind if I’d have it propagated already (coz the name really sucks). It will cost me a few more bucks and a trip to the bank to have it redone. So, chances are, I’d stick with it? Wtf.

My hand is a bit full right now so maybe I’d wrap things up with the new blog sometime in the future. Sigh.
